European travel hire post Brexit

If you’re planning on taking one of our campervans further than the UK then you are in for an amazing time! There are so many beautiful countries waiting to be explored, and with the correct preparation a holiday across Europe will be a very rewarding experience.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit affecting travel it has become difficult to keep up with what is needed to travel abroad. That’s why we have compromised a list of things that you need to have when you travel.

ETIAS VISA Waiver Scheme

Since the start of this year (2022), British Citizens are required to obtain a ETIAS visa waiver in order to enter other European countries. This new document was introduced by the European Travel Information and Authorisation System to help improve security in the EU.

The visa can be obtained by completing an online form and will be valid for all 26 counties within the Schengen Area.

COVID Passport

Despite restrictions easing across the UK we are still living a COVID-19 world. With the rules and advice continuously changing it is important that you check in advance for the latest information of what is needed to enter a specific country.

To stay up to date with the latest COVID-19 information for a specific country the Foreign travel advice page is the best place. – https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

EHIC/GHIC Health Card

The European Union has a reciprocal agreement with the UK to access state-provided healthcare. To access the system you would originally require a EHIC health card, however since leaving the EU British Citizens are now required to obtain Global Health Insurance Cards.

Despite this, if you still have a valid non-expired card then this can still be used.

To apply for a GHIC health card you simply need to visit the NHS website

Animal Health Certificate

If you’re planning on bringing your furry friend along with you on your travels then it is vital you ensure you have all their correct documentation.

This includes their animal health certificate, proof of microchip and rabies vaccination. If you are looking to travel to Finland, Ireland, Norway or Northern Ireland then you will also be required to provide proof of tapeworm treatment.

Your pets AHC must be obtained within 21 days before you travel and will remain valid for four months. Since Brexit only vets can provide you with an AHC document, meaning that you can no longer use a Pet Passport, so ensure to update yourself with the new rules.

Another surprising rule for pet owners wishing to travel into the EU, you are unable to bring any meat-based products into the EU and these can be confiscated. An alternative would be vegan solutions whilst travelling into European countries and purchasing meat products once you have reached your destination.

Vehicle on hire certificate

In normal instances any UK registered vehicle would need to present its V5c document to cross a European border. However, when it comes to a vehicle hire this is not possible, instead there is a different document you need.

The Vehicle on Hire Certificate (VE103) and written confirmation will provide you permission to drive the vehicle. By simply selecting the European travel option upon checkout at California Campers you will be provided with these two vital documents, as well European breakdown cover.

Displaying Number plates

After some contradicting information the government has finalised what is required for number plates travelling abroad.

For certain countries, simply having a UK identifier on the number plate is enough for entry. However, countries including Spain, require for there to be a UK sticker visible regardless of what is on the number plate of the vehicle.

As part of the European Travel option when booking with California Campers you will also be provided with the correct sticker for your campervan.
At California Campers we have tried to cover as much of the requirements as possible, with the European Travel option you will receive the VE103, European breakdown cover, and UK sticker all for £125. View our vehicles today. https://california-campers.co.uk/campervans
